About the Author
Dr. Michael Lobo — A Biography
Origins & Education
Michael Lobo was born in 1953, the second of four children of Camillo Lobo and Maisie nee Fernandes. His father, an army officer, saw active service in Egypt and Italy during World War II.
Now a full-time writer, Michael was earlier in the academic profession. A Ph.D. in transonic aerodynamics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, he was awarded the Young Scientist Award of the Indian National Science Academy in 1983. He then spent several years at Cranfield University, England (see details below).
His writings tend to focus on the study of origins. His magnum opus is the Genealogical Encyclopaedia of Mangalorean Catholic families, but he has also written on subjects as ethics, etymology, popular music, and chess.
Career in England
In 1984, Michael Lobo moved to England on a Commonwealth Scholarship, joining the Cranfield Institute of Technology, where he eventually became a faculty member. He supervised Ph.D. students from various countries and was associated with a consortium of industry, including Rolls Royce and British Aerospace. He authored papers on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and a book entitled "Time Marching — A Step-by-step Guide to a Flow Solver" (Ashgate Press, 1997).
During his spare time he compiled a 1,000-page dictionary of English words derived from Classical Greek and wrote a book on the origins of vintage songs.
The Genealogical Project
In 1992, while browsing an antique baptismal register (1810–80) at Milagres Church, Mangalore, Dr. Lobo discovered the 1841 birth record of his great-grandfather, Pedro Antonio Lobo. This became the nucleus of an encyclopaedic project documenting the history and genealogy of Mangalorean Catholic families — drawing on 19th century parish registers from Rosario Cathedral and Milagres Church, personal interviews, and unpublished genealogical notes by various old time scholars.
The work was eventually extended to families of the entire district of South Kanara. It is 10,000 pages in all.
